I'm having a hard time believing this Michael fellow. I mean seriously! First of all, I'm getting a little annoyed by the different names he uses for Angel. Mara, Tirzah, Amanda...where did Amanda come from anyway? It's like he justs makes them up. I don't know.
I also can't believe that after simply passing her in the street God tells him to marry her. They had no interaction whatsoever and he goes into the brothel and asks her to marry him! A normal human being would not do that. However, since God is the one working through Michael, it would never be something that Michael could do on his own.
It sounds like the people around Michael were also in disbelief and thought he was a fool. I can remember times when I thought that of some people when they were called to do God's work. Did it make sense? No. Was it going to make their life easier? No. It just seemed absurd! If we're really doing God's will, then we may look like fools to the rest of the world. Living radically for God sure doesn't make sense to those that aren't following Jesus.
So I think I need to stop being so skeptical of Michael.
I'm on chapter 17, (page 216), and there is still a lot of story left. Can't wait to read what happens next!

ReplyDeleteI love your observation!! I agree that it is hard to imagine a situation like this unfolding and that a man like Michael could actually exist in our world. But, in Jesus' day, it did happen!! Not exactly the same way, but there were similarities. I guess that is why this novel is considered to be FICTIONAL. I need to remember too that God works in ways that we can't even comprehend. So, to question what others do is simply foolish. Thanks for the reminder :).
P.S. I assumed Michael used the name Amanda because it means "Worthy of Love"...just a thought :)
Ah, yes. Worthy of Love...that makes sense now!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda!
Yes, I think that the whole situation is hard to believe, but totally agree with what you guys are saying. And, can you believe the self control that this man has? Wowsa's, if she's as tempting as the book makes her sound, that must have been so hard (no pun intended :) for him.
ReplyDeleteWell, Amanda, your name has been in both books. It is a great name. :)
I'm about halfway through the book. I can't imagine what else will happen b/c it almost seems like things are falling into place. Anxious to read the rest!
i'm posting because i'm on the computer! yay, good for me! but i do remember now...the name calling drove me crazy. i'm sure it seemed biblical back then to come up with all these names, but it does seem weird. and...i would really like to see a person now days that is so captivating as she was. i mean, the book says that she turned all heads when she walked down the streets and she was the most popular one in the brothel. oh to be that beautiful. however, in my mind, you girls all are because you are beautiful because you are inside and out. she was on the inside too, but she had to discover that she was. i do think that people who are in that "business" struggle with self-worth. but at the same time, she didn't have many options when she did that as a career. what's said about that, is it still happens these days. so thank you girls for being you and for being beautiful people! so what cracks me up, is that amanda is done with the book. how far is everyone else? just curious. i believe we need to continue to think of another book to read because we will be ready for it before you know it. if you look at karen kingsbury's website, you can search all the books that she has written, and maybe that will give us some ideas. i will be thinking. another good author is jodi picoult. she wrote my sister's keeper. i have read another book by her and it was excellent. so anyhow, be in touch girls!
